Films

Immersive, visceral motion picture experiences that entertain and inspire.

Jon Long

For over 20 years I have been a media professional specializing in financing, creating and distributing film and television. I have produced, written and directed several films and television programs for companies such as Universal Studios, IMAX, Disney, Universal, Entertainment One National Geographic and PBS. I have also directed many commercials and tourism related film projects.

I recently produced, directed and wrote The Search for Freedom (Universal Studios, Entertainment One), which has won several film festival awards and played in over 100 theatres in North America prior to its global release. It was described as “An incredibly inspiring, stunningly beautiful and deeply heartfelt and wise film” by the Maui Film Festival, where it won an audience award. I also created IMAX Extreme which became one of the highest box office grossing documentaries and received critical acclaim as “one of the best IMAX films ever”.

My passion is the creative process and making films that entertain, inspire and engage audiences. I founded The Earth Network, a company that creates motion picture experiences and connects them to the world through innovative combinations of traditional entertainment media, digital media and social networking.

I believe that film has the power to have a positive social impact and I seek out stories, collaborators and partners who share a vision to create meaningful entertainment that reaches large and diverse audiences. Beyond the entertainment experience, many of my projects include an ongoing educational component, which I’ve worked on with Outward Bound, PBS, World Wildlife Fund and others.

Currently, I’m creating an integrated media project and feature film called The SKOOL PROJECT about a paradigm shift in education, where community engagement, creativity and compassion are valued as much as academic achievement. Students thrive in a system where they are given an opportunity to explore and develop their creativity, values, character and relationships and become more active in decisions and outcomes that affect their lives. I’m also creating another integrated media project and film called FLOW, which will tell a compelling human story and explore how we can find our maximum personal creativity, learning and performance through a daily practice that involves play and fun.

Some of my past commercial clients include SAAB Cars, IBM, Molson, Coors Light, Chrysler, Mazda, Club Med, Quiksilver Clothing, The North Face, Patagonia,  Rossignol Skis and Burton Snowboards.

Notes from the front lines

THE DAILY BEAST

“Beautifully filmed and edited, The Search for Freedom looks to the past, present, and future of not only those who risk it all but also for the everyday enthusiasts, all of whom are looking for a moment or two unplugged from an increasingly connected society. Far more than showcasing just adrenalin porn, it digs into the reasons a growing number of people engage in such behaviors, and in the process breaks them down in a way that any viewer can appreciate.”

“The Search for Freedom” is more than an action sports documentary. The movie by Jon Long is almost a philosophical essay on what makes someone feel alive.
